Innovation in action: bringing tokenised NFC payments to MCB

Tourists could already tap to pay on local terminals, but Mauritian customers could not. This project embedded card tokenisation directly into the Juice app.

The challenge

MCB wanted to modernise payment capabilities for local customers. NFC payment technology was already available to tourists on local POS systems, but Mauritian customers had no equivalent service. The bank needed to move quickly without compromising quality.

Why it mattered now

The global shift away from cash was accelerating. Offering NFC payments would modernise the local ecosystem, open a revenue opportunity, and let MCB capitalise on rising contactless adoption.

The approach
  • Worked with VISA, Entrust and Mastercard to design an end to end experience that met both technical and usability standards
  • Bridged VISA's tokenisation services, Entrust's intermediary systems and MCB's banking infrastructure through close review of technical documentation and hands on developer collaboration
  • Planned a phased rollout: VISA credit cardholders first to prove system stability, then Mastercard credit and debit, then digital card management
  • Built for Android only, since Apple's wallet integrations were not available in Mauritius at the time
Card tokenisation flow inside the Juice app
What shipped
  • Card tokenisation embedded inside the existing Juice app rather than shipped as a separate product
  • Customers could tokenise a physical card and pay by NFC straight from their phone
  • Edge cases handled explicitly, including offline payments and payment failures

Rather than a standalone wallet, tokenisation lived inside the app customers already trusted.

Outcomes
  • 15% of MCB's customer base tokenised their cards within a short period
  • Higher card usage fed directly into revenue growth
  • Set a benchmark for digital payment solutions in the Mauritian market
